Taxidermy Care Instructions

Proper care will help your taxidermy piece last for many years. Please follow these guidelines to maintain the beauty and integrity of your mount.

1. Display Location

  • Avoid direct sunlight. UV light can cause fading and drying of the fur, feathers, and skin.

  • Keep away from heat sources like fireplaces, radiators, or heating vents to prevent cracking or shrinkage.

  • Maintain a stable environment. Humidity should stay between 40–60% to avoid mold, mildew, or insect damage.

2. Dusting & Cleaning

  • Use a soft brush (like a makeup brush or feather duster) to gently remove dust. For hard-to-reach areas, use canned air on a low setting.

  • Never use water, cleaning sprays, or household cleaners—they can damage the mount.

3. Pest Prevention

  • Inspect your mount regularly for signs of insects like dermestid beetles or moths.

  • If you notice any activity (e.g., small holes, shed skins, frass/dust), isolate the piece and contact a professional immediately.

  • Cedar chips or pest deterrents (kept nearby, not on the mount) can help discourage insects.

4. Handling

  • Always handle with clean, dry hands or gloves.

  • Lift mounts from the base or support structure, not by ears, antlers, or tails.

  • Avoid excessive handling—taxidermy is for display, not frequent movement.

5. Transportation

  • If moving or transporting, wrap the piece carefully with soft cloth or bubble wrap and secure it to prevent shifting.

  • Do not store in a damp or hot environment (like basements or attics).

6. Professional Maintenance

  • For deep cleaning, repairs, or restoration, contact Fur and Blade Taxidermy NY or another qualified taxidermist.

  • Annual inspections are a good idea, especially for older mounts.
